Characterization in "The Tell-Tale Heart"

Page history last edited by Amy Thompson 14 years, 5 months ago

Complete a power thinking outline in order to describe a trait of the narrator from the story "The Tell-Tale Heart" Pg 78.  You can use the example to see what to put for each part, but you may not use the character trait, Crazy/Insane or any synonyms of that:).  Come up with a different character trait that you need to analyze a little more!

Characterization in “The Tell-Tale Heart”                 Classwork

1: Narrator of Tell-Tale Heart (78)

            2: Crazy/Insane

3: The narrator kills the old man because

of his eye… He says, “I made up my mind to

take the life of the old man and thus

rid myself of the eye forever” (Poe

76).

4: Wanting to kill someone just because of his/her eye is irrational.

4: The narrator’s motivation for his actions show that he is not thinking like a normal person would.

3: In addition to being motivated to kill by an unusual factor, the narrator shows abnormal paranoia when he hears the old man’s heart beating from across the room….  He says, “there came to my ears a low, dull, quick sound… it was the beating of the old man’s heart” (Poe 76).

4: It is impossible for someone to hear another’s heartbeat from across the room and yet, this narrator claims he can.

4: This shows his delusional understanding of reality which clearly shows insanity.

Other characteristics you could use for 2s:

            2: Audacious- risk taker

            2: Careful

            2: Patient

            2: Obsessive

            2:  Determined

            2: A good actor
